A will is, in fact, a tool for the probate process. It tells the probate officers what the deceased person's intent is, and one purpose of the probate process is to carry out the will of the deceased person.
Many people would, however, prefer to avoid the costs, publicity, and delays associated with probate. Other estate planning techniques can be used to do this.
