The CFP Board of Standards requires prospective Certified Financial Planner certificants to hold a college degree, and to have completed qualifying courses of study, and examinations in the following major planning areas:

• General Principles of Financial Planning
• Insurance Planning
• Employee Benefits Planning
• Investment Planning
• Income Tax Planning
• Retirement Planning
• Estate Planning

Upon completion of qualifying studies and examinations, a candidate can apply to sit for the comprehensive CFP Certification Examination.
